Solar carport installation cost

What it really costs to install a solar carport in the UK in 2026 — per space, per kWp, and broken to line items. All figures ex VAT.

QUICK ANSWER

A commercial solar carport is installed for roughly £6,000 to £12,000 per parking space (ex VAT), or about £1,100 to £1,600 per kWp at scale — two to three times rooftop solar (£700 to £1,050 per kWp), because the hot-dip galvanised steel structure and foundations are 40 to 50 per cent of the job. A 100-space scheme is therefore in the region of £600,000 to £1m ex VAT. Smaller structures run £1,200 to £3,000 per kWp. Commercial buyers pay 20% VAT, which is recoverable if you are VAT-registered; the 0% rate is residential only. Per-space cost falls as bay count rises, so larger car parks get materially better value.

What you are paying for — the install cost, line by line

Unlike a rooftop system, most of a carport's cost is below and around the panels. A typical breakdown of an installed commercial carport looks like this:

Install line itemShare of costWhat it covers
Steel structure & canopy~40-50%Columns, beams, purlins, hot-dip galvanised frame, roof canopy
Groundworks & foundations~10-20%Screw piles or concrete footings, excavation, cable trenching
PV modules & mounting~15-25%Panels, rails, clamps
Inverters & electrical~10-15%Inverters, DC/AC cabling, protection, metering to BS 7671
Grid connection (DNO)VariesG99 application and any reinforcement — the biggest wildcard
Design, planning & PM~5-10%Structural design, Class OA application, glare study, project management

The grid connection is the item that most often moves a budget: a commercial array needs a DNO G99 pre-approval, and if the network needs reinforcement the cost and the timeline both rise. We check capacity at survey so it is priced in, not discovered later. Other things that push the install cost up: poor ground conditions that force concrete over screw piles, long spans or exposed sites that need heavier steel, EV charging added to the scope, and small bay counts where the fixed steel cost has little capacity to spread across.

INDICATIVE INSTALL-COST ESTIMATOR

Rough out the cost, generation and payback of your carport install

A back-of-envelope model for a commercial solar carport install. It runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere. Every figure is indicative and ex VAT; the real numbers come from a site survey and your half-hourly meter data.

Indicative system size — kWp installed
Indicative install cost — ex VAT, before grants or tax relief
Indicative annual saving — year one — self-consumption + a modest export rate
Indicative simple payback — excludes AIA/50% FYA tax relief, which shortens it

Rough model only, at a UK yield of ~920 kWh/kWp. It excludes your DNO grid-connection cost, any EV-charging revenue, and the 100% AIA + 50% first-year tax relief that shortens real payback — and it assumes commercial 20% VAT (recoverable). Commercial export is usually a negotiated PPA, not a flat rate. See the full install cost breakdown, then request a fixed-price feasibility for the real numbers.

How to pay, and the tax that changes the real cost

Few sites pay all-cash. The routes that apply to a commercial carport install in 2026:

  • Capital purchase + capital allowances. Solar PV is a special-rate asset, so it does not qualify for full expensing. The correct 100% route is the Annual Investment Allowance (£1m a year), then a 50% first-year allowance on the balance for companies. See capital allowances in detail. Take your own tax advice.
  • Asset finance or lease. Spreads the capital over the life of the asset; the energy saving offsets the repayment.
  • Zero-capital PPA. A funder installs and owns the carport; you host it and buy the power below grid price with no upfront cost — the route that makes long-payback schemes work.

On top of that, on-site generation is exempt from business rates in England to 31 March 2035, and EV charging under the canopy can claim the Workplace Charging Scheme (£500 per socket, up to 40 sockets, to 31 March 2027).

What it saves — self-consumption beats export

A carport pays back through the electricity you avoid buying, not mainly through export. A unit you use on site is worth your import price (often 26p or more per kWh); a unit you export is worth far less. For commercial sites, export is usually a negotiated power purchase agreement rather than the domestic Smart Export Guarantee, and SEG rates are supplier-set and variable, so we size the array against your half-hourly load first to maximise self-consumption, then treat surplus as a bonus. Daytime-heavy sites — retail, healthcare, offices — self-consume most of what they generate, which is where the economics are strongest.

Where you have a good roof, install rooftop first — it is cheaper and faster to pay back. The carport wins when the roof is full or unsuitable, or when the car park is the only remaining surface and you need the EV charging anyway. We will tell you which order makes sense for your site.

Is the cost worth it?

Honestly, not on every site. A tiny bay count, a shaded or awkward car park, or a site with almost no daytime load can push payback past the point where a carport makes sense on its own — and we will say so, and point you to a rooftop array or a PPA instead. Where the numbers do work, the right comparison is not carport-versus-rooftop but carport-versus-25-years-of-rising-grid-prices. The full case is on is a commercial solar carport worth it?

What is genuinely time-sensitive

No countdowns. Two real dates: the Workplace Charging Scheme's £500-per-socket rate runs to 31 March 2027, and a DNO G99 connection often takes 8 to 16 weeks — so an early feasibility is what keeps an install on schedule. The Class OA planning right is a standing permitted-development right and is not closing.

Cost questions

How much does solar carport installation cost in the UK?

Installed solar carports typically run from about £6,000 to £12,000 per parking space (ex VAT), or around £1,100 to £1,600 per kWp at commercial scale, materially more than rooftop solar (£700-£1,050 per kWp) because the hot-dip galvanised steel structure and foundations are 40-50% of the job. Smaller structures run £1,200-£3,000 per kWp. As a guide, a 100-space commercial scheme is roughly £600,000-£1m ex VAT. Per-space cost falls as bay count rises, so larger car parks get materially better value.

Why does solar carport installation cost more than rooftop solar?

Because a carport is a steel structure you build, not a roof you reuse. The columns, beams, canopy frame and foundations make up 40-50% of the total, which is why carports cost roughly two to three times rooftop per kWp. That fixed structural overhead is also why they get much better value at scale: a 250-space scheme spreads the steel cost across far more generating capacity than a 20-space one, pulling the per-kWp cost down toward the £1,100 floor.

What size solar carport can we install, and how much will it generate?

Carports size by parking bay, at about 2 kWp per standard bay (4-6 panels over roughly 12 sqm). At UK yields of around 900-950 kWh per kWp (lower in northern Scotland, higher in the south-west), a 2 kWp bay generates roughly 1,700-2,000 kWh a year. So a 100-bay car park is around 200 kWp and generates roughly 180,000-190,000 kWh annually, enough to make a real dent in site electricity costs and feed EV charging.

What grants and tax relief apply to a commercial solar carport?

The Workplace Charging Scheme funds the EV sockets. The PV plant is special-rate expenditure, so it qualifies for the Annual Investment Allowance (100% on up to £1m a year) plus a 50% First-Year Allowance on the balance for companies, not full expensing. On-site generation is exempt from business rates in England to 31 March 2035. Public-sector sites may access Great British Energy funding. Take your own tax advice; we will give your accountant the figures.

Do commercial buyers get 0% VAT on a solar carport?

No. The 0% VAT rate is a residential relief (in Great Britain to 31 March 2027, then 5%). Commercial buyers pay standard 20% VAT, which is recoverable if you are VAT-registered, so we quote prices ex VAT. A carport within the curtilage of a home may qualify for 0%, but HMRC does not expressly cover standalone structures, so we say confirm per project rather than assert it.

How much does a residential solar carport installation cost?

A domestic single- or double-bay driveway carport, usually with an EV charger and often a battery, typically costs £8,000-£25,000 including VAT, depending on size and whether storage is added. On-site build is fast, around 2-5 days. Where the inverter is 3.68kW per phase or less it connects under G98 fit-and-inform. Payback is generally longer than a roof install because of the structure, but the carport also shelters the car and carries home EV charging.
