Retail and Supermarket Car Park Installation

Turnkey retail solar carport installation across the UK — structure, PV, electrical and grid connection under one contract. 250-1,000+ kWp typical. 8-year payback.

  • MCS-certified
  • Structural sign-off
  • Class OA handled
  • G99 managed

Retail and supermarket car parks are the highest-value carports to install and the hardest to sequence, because the site never stops trading. The install has to be phased bay-by-bay, with the disruptive groundworks and steel erection pushed into night and weekend windows, while daytime shopper demand lines up almost perfectly with the generation curve for strong self-consumption.

Why installing on a retail and supermarket car park site is different

Every solar carport is a steel structure engineered to BS EN 1991 wind and snow loads, founded on screw piles or concrete footings from a ground survey, and connected to the grid — but the sequencing, the loads and the funding change by sector. For this sector, the install turns on:

  • Phased, bay-by-bay install with night and weekend works so the car park keeps trading throughout
  • EV rapid-charger conduit and DNO capacity headroom designed in at the groundworks stage, not retrofitted
  • High bay count drives the per-kWp cost toward the lower ~£1,100-£1,300 end
  • Daytime trading load matches the generation curve, so most output is self-consumed at full retail value

Typical install for this sector

System size
250-1,000+ kWp
Panels
460-1,850
Car park size
≈130-500 bays
Project value
£300k-£1.5m+ ex VAT
Payback
8 years
Annual generation
225,000-950,000 kWh
Annual CO₂ saved
47-197 tonnes

Prices are indicative and ex VAT (commercial buyers pay 20% VAT, recoverable if registered). Per-space cost falls as bay count rises — see the full install cost breakdown.

Sizing, cost and payback

Carports size by parking bay, at roughly 2 kWp per standard space (four to six panels), so this sector's typical 250-1,000+ kWp covers a large part of the car park. At UK yields of about 900 to 950 kWh per kWp, that generates in the region of 225,000-950,000 kWh a year. A full install here typically runs £300k-£1.5m+ ex VAT, with simple payback around 8 years before the Annual Investment Allowance and 50% first-year allowance are applied — which shorten it. The steel structure is 40 to 50 per cent of that figure, which is why larger bay counts get materially better value per kWp.

What the install involves on a retail and supermarket car park site

On a trading retail car park the install is a logistics exercise as much as an engineering one. We programme the loud, disruptive stages — pile driving or footing pours and steel lifts — into the quietest trading windows, often overnight or early morning, and we hold a rolling traffic-management plan so a block of bays is closed, built and reopened before the next is touched. Delivery yards, click-and-collect bays, trolley bays and ANPR barriers all have to keep working through the programme, so the canopy layout is set around them rather than the other way round. Because a supermarket's refrigeration and lighting run hard through daylight, we size the array to that base load so most of the generation is self-consumed at full retail value rather than exported. Rapid EV chargers for shoppers are usually the reason the grid application grows, so we design the charger conduit, the metering and any dedicated feed at the same time as the canopy rather than digging the aprons twice. Signage and trolley-bay lighting can be carried on the same structure, and where the estate spans several stores we standardise the canopy module so a rollout across sites reuses one engineered design.

Consents, compliance and funding for this sector

Class OA prior-approval applies in England (canopy over 10m from any dwelling curtilage, no part above 4m, glare on neighbours assessed as a prior-approval matter). SuDS run-off to a permeable area within the parking area is a mandatory build CONDITION, not a prior-approval matter. Commercial buyers pay standard 20% VAT (recoverable if VAT-registered), never the 0% residential rate.

We prepare and submit the planning route (Class OA prior approval in England, Class 9M in Scotland, or full planning in Wales and Northern Ireland) and the DNO G99 grid application on your behalf, and run them in parallel with fabrication. See the planning guide and the grants and funding routes.

A representative install

A regional supermarket with a 210-space car park, no roof left after an earlier rooftop install, and rising customer EV demand. We install a 320 kW canopy over about 175 spaces on helical screw-pile foundations, phased so most bays keep trading, with 20 EV sockets and their conduit set in at groundworks. Illustrative.

Whatever the sector, one MCS-certified team holds the whole scope — structure, PV, electrical and grid — with separate written warranties on the structure and the panels and an optional O&M plan, so you know who is accountable for the canopy in year eight.
