solar carport installation in Manchester
Serving Manchester and the wider Greater Manchester area, including Salford, Trafford, Stockport.
Why a solar carport install works on Manchester’s commercial sites
Manchester runs on tarmac. Between the retail parks off the M60, the logistics yards at Trafford Park and the surface car parks around the city centre, Greater Manchester holds an enormous acreage of parking that already carries a grid connection and a daytime electrical load sitting right beside it. A solar carport installation turns that parked-over ground into generation without touching a roof or losing a single bay — the steel canopy goes over the cars, and the panels sit on top.
For a facilities or estates team, that dual use is the point. A distribution unit near Trafford Park, an office campus at Salford Quays and MediaCityUK, or a large visitor car park at a venue on the scale of the Etihad Stadium all share the same profile: a wide, flat, unshaded parking area and a building next door drawing power through the working day. Solar generated over the car park is consumed on site first, which is where the economics of a carport install actually live — self-consumption, not export.
Manchester City Council has committed to a 2038 net-zero target, the most ambitious of any major UK city and twelve years ahead of the national 2050 date. That does not hand you a grant, but it does shape the procurement and reporting expectations landing on Manchester businesses, and an installed solar carport is a visible, metered contribution to a Scope 2 reduction that a tenant or a public-sector client can audit.
Planning in Manchester: prior approval, not full permission
In England, a commercial solar carport install is covered by Class OA permitted development, which came into force on 21 December 2023. That means most Manchester installs need prior approval from Manchester City Council as the local planning authority — not a full planning application. Prior approval narrows what the council assesses to siting, design and glare, and it carries a 56-day determination period.
The limits matter and we design to them: the canopy must be no more than 4 metres tall, must sit more than 10 metres from any dwelling, and the right excludes listed buildings and scheduled monuments. Sustainable drainage (SuDS) for the run-off coming off a new canopy is a mandatory condition rather than a prior-approval matter, so the drainage strategy has to be resolved regardless. Once approved, the development must be completed within three years.
This is a standing right, not a window that is closing — there is no deadline to beat, and any installer telling you to rush a carport through before the rules change is inventing pressure. Sites inside Manchester’s conservation areas, or any listed structure in the city, fall outside Class OA and need a conventional planning application, which we will flag at survey.
The grid connection is the long pole: Electricity North West
The single item most likely to set your timeline is the Distribution Network Operator. In Manchester that is Electricity North West, and the connection route depends on system size. A genuinely tiny array under 3.68 kW per phase can use the G98 fit-and-inform process, but any commercial-scale carport — which is almost all of them — sits above that and needs G99 pre-approval from Electricity North West before it energises.
G99 approval commonly runs 8 to 16 weeks, and can run longer on constrained parts of the Manchester network, which makes it the critical path on nearly every project. The practical consequence for an install is simple: we submit the G99 application as early as the design allows, usually straight after the structural survey, so the connection clock is running while groundworks and steel are still being scheduled rather than after.
How a Manchester solar carport install runs
A carport install is a groundworks-and-steel job with a solar system on top, and it runs in a set order: survey, design, consents, groundworks, steel, then commissioning.
Survey covers the parking layout, the existing incoming supply and switchroom, shading, and — critically in Manchester — the ground. Design fixes the bay module, canopy geometry, panel count and the point of connection. Consents run in parallel: the Class OA prior approval to the council and the G99 to Electricity North West, the two items that gate the programme. Groundworks install the foundations. Steel erection raises the frames and the roof deck. Commissioning ties in the inverters, the metering and any EV sockets, and completes the witness testing the DNO requires.
Foundations are where Manchester’s industrial past shows up. Much of Trafford Park, Openshaw and the older estates is made ground and brownfield — former industrial land where fill, buried obstructions and localised contamination are common. That drives the foundation choice: piled or screw foundations where conditions allow a slim footprint, or ballasted and cast-in-situ bases where you cannot dig freely. A trial hole or a short intrusive investigation at survey is cheap insurance against a foundation redesign mid-programme, and it is standard on our Manchester sites.
What a solar carport costs to install in Manchester
Carports cost more per unit of generation than rooftop solar because you are paying for a structure as well as a solar system — the steel alone is roughly 40 to 50 per cent of the job. As a rule of thumb, a rooftop commercial install lands around £700–£1,050 per kWp, while a carport runs about two to three times that. At scale a Manchester carport install is broadly £1,100–£1,600 per kWp, with smaller schemes £1,200–£3,000 per kWp; put per bay, that is roughly £6,000–£12,000 per space. All of those figures are ex VAT, which is the right way to read a commercial quote, since the 20 per cent VAT is generally recoverable. The 0 per cent VAT rate applies only to residential installations (to 31 March 2027, then 5 per cent), so treat any 0 per cent figure on a commercial car-park quote as a mistake.
On tax, solar PV is a special-rate asset. That means it qualifies for the 100 per cent Annual Investment Allowance (up to the £1m limit) and, for companies, the 50 per cent First-Year Allowance — it does not qualify for full expensing, whatever a brochure claims. Business rates on eligible on-site renewable plant are exempt in England to 31 March 2035, which helps a Manchester scheme though not one in Wales or Scotland. Take your own tax advice on your position before you commit.
Where the model turns positive is self-consumption. Solar-only payback on a carport sits around 8 to 10 years; adding EV charging under the canopy shortens it, because you are displacing expensive imported power at the socket. The Workplace Charging Scheme contributes £500 per socket (up to £2,000 for state education), covering up to 75 per cent of cost across up to 40 sockets, and runs to 31 March 2027. For the underlying generation, savings and export figures — including the export rate, which moves — we keep the numbers on our national cost page rather than quote a rate here that would date: see our cost breakdown.
Manchester car parks and business parks we install across
We install solar carports across Manchester’s commercial parking estate. The strongest candidates are the large surface car parks and yards at Trafford Park, Wythenshawe Industrial Estate, Sharston, Roundthorn and Openshaw — sites with the open span, the daytime load and, often, the fleet or staff vehicles that make an EV-ready canopy pay. Retail and business parks with wide customer car parks, and edge-of-centre sites near Manchester Airport and Salford Quays, fit the same brief.
On postcodes, we cover the city centre and inner core — M1, M2, M3 and M4 — the Old Trafford and Hulme corridor at M15 and M16, Trafford Park itself at M17, Wythenshawe at M22, and Salford Quays and MediaCityUK at M50, alongside the wider Greater Manchester boroughs of Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside and Oldham. A canopy covering an entire car park at one of these sites is entirely feasible where the layout and grid capacity allow — the survey confirms both.
Get a solar carport installation quote for Manchester
If you run a car park or a parking yard anywhere across Manchester and want to know whether a solar carport install stacks up on your site, start with a feasibility review. We will look at your parking layout, your Electricity North West connection, the Class OA planning position with Manchester City Council, and the ground conditions, then come back with an indicative system size, a generation range and a fixed-price proposal. Request a quote and we will tell you honestly whether your site suits a carport — and if it does not, we will say so.
Installing in Manchester, without the risk
Whatever your Greater Manchester site, one MCS-certified team holds the whole scope — structural steel, groundworks, PV, electrical and the DNO grid connection — under a single contract, with separate written warranties on the structure and the panels and an optional O&M plan. So you know exactly who is accountable for the canopy in year eight. We are structural-engineering-led and honest: where a rooftop array would serve you better first, we will say so.
