Why a solar carport installation suits Nottingham sites

Nottingham is a compact, dense city of roughly 337,000 people, and its commercial estate is rich in the one asset a solar carport needs: open, hard-standing car parks. Retail parks, hospital and university staff parks, distribution yards and out-of-town employer car parks from NG1 to NG16 sit exposed to the sky and busy through the working day — exactly the profile where a canopy earns back its steel.

A solar carport installation puts generation directly above vehicles that are already parked all day, so a high share of the output is used on site rather than exported. For a Nottingham employer whose electricity bill runs near the local commercial average of around £38,000 a year, self-consumed solar displaces grid units at full retail price, which is where the economics actually live. Roof space is finite, and often north-facing or cluttered with plant; a car park is a clean, south-tilted plane you design from scratch.

The trade-off is honest. A carport costs more than a rooftop array of the same capacity, because you are buying a steel structure as well as panels — expect roughly two to three times the per-kWp cost of a rooftop system. What you get back is generation on land that was producing nothing, weather protection for vehicles, and a ready-made frame for EV charging.

Nottingham car parks, retail parks and business parks worth surveying

The strongest candidates are sites with a large, contiguous parking area and a solid daytime load. The Boots Enterprise Zone in Beeston is the obvious example: a major employment campus with extensive staff parking and the kind of baseload that suits self-consumption. Castle Marina near the city centre in NG7, the Blenheim Industrial Estate in Bulwell (NG6), and the industrial and trade units around Lenton all pair hard-standing parking with real commercial demand.

Covering an entire car park is rarely the right first move — sizing the canopy to the site’s daytime demand usually beats maximising panel count. We look at where staff and visitor vehicles actually sit, the drainage falls, the height of any surrounding structures, and the position of the incoming supply, then design the array to match load and budget.

Planning: Nottingham City Council and Class OA prior approval

Nottingham sits in England, so most commercial solar carports fall under Class OA permitted development, in force since 21 December 2023. That means a prior approval application to Nottingham City Council as the local planning authority — not a full planning application. The matters the council can assess are limited to siting, design and glare (glare being the one that matters most near roads and rail). Surface-water run-off from the new canopy is handled as a mandatory sustainable drainage condition, not as one of the prior-approval matters, so the drainage design needs to be right regardless.

The right carries limits: canopies must be no more than 4 metres high, must sit more than 10 metres from any dwelling, and the class excludes listed buildings and scheduled monuments — so heritage-sensitive spots near Nottingham Castle or the Old Market Square Council House need checking before design. The council has 56 days to determine a prior approval application, and once approved the installation must be completed within three years. This is a standing right, not a closing window, so there is no reason to rush the decision itself. There is every reason to lodge the application early, though, because the grid connection is the real long pole in the programme.

Connecting to the grid: National Grid Electricity Distribution and G99

The distribution network operator for Nottingham is National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands). Under the connection rules, only tiny systems — up to 3.68 kW per phase — qualify for the G98 fit-and-inform route. Every commercial carport sits well above that, so it needs a G99 application and formal pre-approval from the DNO before it can energise.

On most networks a G99 determination runs around 8 to 16 weeks, and it is usually the single longest item in the whole project. That is why we submit the G99 application as early as the design allows, in parallel with the prior approval, rather than waiting for steel to be ordered. Where the local network is constrained, the DNO may return a connection offer with export limitation or reinforcement costs; knowing that early lets you size the system, or add battery storage and EV charging to lift self-consumption, before committing.

The installation process, step by step in Nottingham

A Nottingham solar carport installation follows the same disciplined sequence every time:

  1. Survey. A topographical and structural survey of the car park, plus a ground investigation and a review of buried services and drainage falls. Half-hourly meter data tells us the real daytime load.
  2. Design. Structural steel layout, PV string design, a shading and yield model for your specific orientation, and the electrical route back to the incoming supply.
  3. Consents. Class OA prior approval to Nottingham City Council and the G99 application to National Grid Electricity Distribution, run concurrently.
  4. Groundworks. Set out the foundations, break out and reinstate hard-standing, and dig cable trenches — the phase most disruptive to a live car park, so it is sequenced bay by bay.
  5. Steel. Erect the canopy frame, which is typically 40 to 50% of the total cost, followed by purlins and mounting rails.
  6. Commissioning. Mount and wire the panels and inverters, complete the DNO witness testing, energise, and hand over with an operation and maintenance pack.

We phase the works so most of the car park stays usable — important for a busy Nottingham employer or retail site that cannot lose its parking for weeks.

Foundations and Nottingham ground conditions

Foundation design is where a carport quote is won or lost, and it is site-specific. Nottingham’s geology includes the Sherwood Sandstone the city’s famous caves are cut into, but much of the commercial land around Lenton, Bulwell and the older industrial estates is made ground from former uses. Under the tarmac you may find anything from competent rock to fill, buried foundations, or services.

That is why a trial-hole and a proper ground investigation come before the steel is ordered, not after. On stable sandstone, driven or screw piles go in quickly and cheaply. On made ground, near buried services, or where contamination limits digging, concrete pad foundations or wider piles may be needed instead. Getting this right protects the price — the wrong assumption about ground conditions is the most common reason a carport budget slips.

What a Nottingham solar carport installation costs

Commercial quotes are given ex VAT. The 20% VAT applies but is recoverable for a VAT-registered business; the 0% VAT relief is residential only and runs to 31 March 2027 before stepping to 5%, so it does not apply to a company car park.

As a working range for Nottingham sites:

On generation, the UK national yield is about 900–950 kWh per kWp a year. At roughly 2 kWp per bay, a bay might produce in the order of 1,700–2,000 kWh a year — but there is never a single guaranteed number, and the figure you plan around must come from a yield model for your own orientation and shading. Solar-only payback typically lands at 8–10 years, and shorter where EV charging and high daytime self-consumption push more of the output through your own meter. For how savings, export and payback are modelled, see our cost and savings page.

Adding EV charging under the canopy

A carport is the natural host for workplace EV charging, and the structure and groundworks are already there. The Workplace Charging Scheme contributes £500 per socket (up to £2,000 per socket for state-funded education), covering up to 75% of the cost and capped at 40 sockets, and it currently runs to 31 March 2027. Pairing chargers with the array lifts self-consumption and improves the payback on the whole scheme, which is why we usually model the two together rather than as separate projects.

Tax and business rates — take your own advice

Solar PV is treated as special-rate plant, so it qualifies for the Annual Investment Allowance (100% relief up to £1m) and the 50% First-Year Allowance for companies — it does not qualify for full expensing, despite what some quotes imply. Onsite renewable generation plant and machinery is also exempt from business rates in England to 31 March 2035, which supports the case for a Nottingham installation specifically. These reliefs interact with your wider position, so take your own tax advice before relying on them.

Postcodes and areas we cover

We install solar carports across the Nottingham postcodes — NG1 and NG2 in and around the city centre, NG5 and NG6 to the north through Bulwell, NG7 and NG8 west through Lenton and Radford, NG9 out to Beeston, and NG16 toward Kimberley. We also work across the neighbouring commercial areas of Beeston, West Bridgford, Arnold, Hucknall and Long Eaton, and out toward Derby, Mansfield and Loughborough.

Nottingham City Council’s Carbon Neutral 2028 Action Plan is the most ambitious city-level net zero commitment in the UK. For an operator, a well-documented solar carport is a concrete, measurable contribution to a Scope 2 reduction, in a city whose infrastructure and policy are already geared toward decarbonisation.
