NHS, Healthcare and Public-Sector Installation

Turnkey NHS solar carport installers across the UK — structure, PV, electrical and grid connection under one contract. 100-750 kWp typical. 9-year payback.

  • MCS-certified
  • Structural sign-off
  • Class OA handled
  • G99 managed

NHS and public-sector car parks are the most access-critical installs we do. The programme is built around blue-light routes, ambulance access and patient drop-off, phasing is safety-led, and the structural sign-off and accreditation scrutiny are the highest of any sector. Funding usually runs through a grant or framework rather than direct capital.

Why installing on a nhs, healthcare and public-sector site is different

Every solar carport is a steel structure engineered to BS EN 1991 wind and snow loads, founded on screw piles or concrete footings from a ground survey, and connected to the grid — but the sequencing, the loads and the funding change by sector. For this sector, the install turns on:

  • Access-critical phasing around blue-light routes, ambulance access and patient drop-off
  • Framework-compliant procurement and grant-delivery experience
  • Full accreditation stack foregrounded: MCS, NICEIC, and structural competence
  • Battery and EV integration common for resilience and patient/visitor charging

Typical install for this sector

System size
100-750 kWp
Panels
185-1,390
Car park size
≈52-400 bays
Project value
£150k-£1m+ ex VAT
Payback
9 years
Annual generation
90,000-712,000 kWh
Annual CO₂ saved

Prices are indicative and ex VAT (commercial buyers pay 20% VAT, recoverable if registered). Per-space cost falls as bay count rises — see the full install cost breakdown.

Sizing, cost and payback

Carports size by parking bay, at roughly 2 kWp per standard space (four to six panels), so this sector's typical 100-750 kWp covers a large part of the car park. At UK yields of about 900 to 950 kWh per kWp, that generates in the region of 90,000-712,000 kWh a year. A full install here typically runs £150k-£1m+ ex VAT, with simple payback around 9 years before the Annual Investment Allowance and 50% first-year allowance are applied — which shorten it. The steel structure is 40 to 50 per cent of that figure, which is why larger bay counts get materially better value per kWp.

What the install involves on a nhs, healthcare and public-sector site

An NHS or council install is governed as much by estates and infection-control procedure as by construction. Every crew works to the trust's or authority's site induction, with banksmen keeping ambulance routes, blue-light access and patient drop-off clear at all times, and noisy or dusty stages planned around ward and clinic sensitivities. Procurement usually runs through a compliant framework rather than a direct order, so we provide the structural, electrical and accreditation evidence a public-sector client needs to award and audit the work. Where the scheme is grant-supported, the programme is built to the funder's milestones, and the structural sign-off and MCS documentation are assembled as a complete, inspectable pack at handover. A hospital's round-the-clock load is the reason the economics work: unlike a nine-to-five office, an acute site consumes generation at night from batteries and through the day directly, so self-consumption is high and export is a minor part of the case. We plan the install to keep blue-light routes, drop-off and disabled bays available continuously, closing and reopening the smallest possible working area at any time, and we coordinate with the trust's fire and infection-control leads before any hot works or dust-generating stage.

Consents, compliance and funding for this sector

Point public bodies to live routes only: the Great British Energy public-sector solar programme (up to £255m across the NHS, ~250 schools and ~15 military sites; up to £30m to 34 NHS trusts announced 24 October 2025, including car-park canopies). PSDS is closed to new applicants (Phase 4 awarded projects run to 31 March 2028). Do not market 0% Salix loans as an open English route.

We prepare and submit the planning route (Class OA prior approval in England, Class 9M in Scotland, or full planning in Wales and Northern Ireland) and the DNO G99 grid application on your behalf, and run them in parallel with fabrication. See the planning guide and the grants and funding routes.

A representative install

An acute hospital with a 300-space visitor car park, 24/7 baseload and reroofing restrictions that rule out rooftop. We install a 450 kW canopy over about 250 spaces as part of a Great British Energy-supported programme, phased around ambulance routes, with 30 EV sockets. Illustrative, based on the public GB Energy NHS solar programme.

Whatever the sector, one MCS-certified team holds the whole scope — structure, PV, electrical and grid — with separate written warranties on the structure and the panels and an optional O&M plan, so you know who is accountable for the canopy in year eight.
