Residential and small-commercial carports are kept in their own silo so they never dilute the commercial installer positioning. These are fast, single- or double-bay driveway installs, usually with an EV charger and a battery, where householder permitted-development limits and the residential VAT question dominate rather than DNO reinforcement.
Why installing on a residential and small-commercial carport site is different
Every solar carport is a steel structure engineered to BS EN 1991 wind and snow loads, founded on screw piles or concrete footings from a ground survey, and connected to the grid — but the sequencing, the loads and the funding change by sector. For this sector, the install turns on:
- Single or double-bay driveway carport with EV charger and battery installed as one job
- Fast 2-5 day on-site build
- G98 fit-and-inform where the inverter is 3.68kW per phase or less
- Fixed-price homeowner packages
Typical install for this sector
- System size
- 2-10 kWp
- Panels
- 4-20
- Car park size
- 1-2 bay driveway
- Project value
- £8k-£25k inc VAT
- Payback
- 9 years
- Annual generation
- 1,700-9,500 kWh
- Annual CO₂ saved
- 0.4-2 tonnes
Prices are indicative and ex VAT (commercial buyers pay 20% VAT, recoverable if registered). Per-space cost falls as bay count rises — see the full install cost breakdown.
Sizing, cost and payback
Carports size by parking bay, at roughly 2 kWp per standard space (four to six panels), so this sector's typical 2-10 kWp covers a large part of the car park. At UK yields of about 900 to 950 kWh per kWp, that generates in the region of 1,700-9,500 kWh a year. A full install here typically runs £8k-£25k inc VAT, with simple payback around 9 years before the Annual Investment Allowance and 50% first-year allowance are applied — which shorten it. The steel structure is 40 to 50 per cent of that figure, which is why larger bay counts get materially better value per kWp.
What the install involves on a residential and small-commercial carport site
A domestic install is quick but tightly constrained. The driveway has to take delivery and a small lifting operation, so access, overhead cables and boundary distances are checked at survey, and the Class E permitted-development limits — eaves height, the 2.5-metre cap within two metres of a boundary, and the not-forward-of-the-principal-elevation rule — shape where the carport can sit. Most homes connect under G98 fit-and-inform where the inverter is 3.68kW per phase or less, which keeps the paperwork light, and where a battery is added we plan its siting and ventilation into the design. The whole build is usually two to five days on site, and we are upfront that a standalone carport does not automatically attract the 0% residential VAT rate — that is a per-project question to confirm.
Consents, compliance and funding for this sector
A householder carport is Class E permitted development: single storey, max eaves 2.5m, overall 4m for a dual-pitched roof or 3m for any other roof when more than 2m from a boundary, capped at 2.5m (not 3m) if any part is within 2m of a boundary, not forward of the principal elevation, and total outbuildings under 50% of the original dwellinghouse curtilage. The 0% residential VAT rate (to 31 March 2027, then 5%) covers energy-saving materials in or within the curtilage of a dwelling, but HMRC does not expressly cover a standalone carport — state as may qualify, confirm per project, never as settled fact. A standalone or commercial carport gets no 0% rate.
We prepare and submit the planning route (Class OA prior approval in England, Class 9M in Scotland, or full planning in Wales and Northern Ireland) and the DNO G99 grid application on your behalf, and run them in parallel with fabrication. See the planning guide and the grants and funding routes.
A representative install
A homeowner with an unsuitable north-facing roof wanting solar plus home EV charging. We install a double-bay driveway carport with a battery in 2 to 5 days, connected under G98 fit-and-inform where the inverter is 3.68kW per phase or less. Illustrative.
Whatever the sector, one MCS-certified team holds the whole scope — structure, PV, electrical and grid — with separate written warranties on the structure and the panels and an optional O&M plan, so you know who is accountable for the canopy in year eight.

Common questions
How much does a residential solar carport installation cost?
A domestic single- or double-bay driveway carport, usually with an EV charger and often a battery, typically costs £8,000-£25,000 including VAT, depending on size and whether storage is added. On-site build is fast, around 2-5 days. Where the inverter is 3.68kW per phase or less it connects under G98 fit-and-inform. Payback is generally longer than a roof install because of the structure, but the carport also shelters the car and carries home EV charging.
